What to do after an accident
Stop and Stay on the Scene
Never leave the scene of an accident even if it is minor! Failing to stop, regardless of who is at fault, may potentially result in criminal prosecution.
Call Law Enforcement
It is always a good idea to call the police, even if there are no accidents. You also may be required to file a police report in order to file a claim with your insurance company.
Seek Medical Attention
Call for an ambulance immediately if you or the other party involved are injured. Injures may also present for days after the accident even if you feel fine at first.
Take Pictures
Take pictures of the scene as soon as possible before anything gets moved or further damaged. Take pictures of any injuries sustained as well. The sooner the better!
Exchange Information
Typically the police officer who arrives can help with collecting this information. Be thorough and collect as much information as possible for your safety.
Report the Accident
Report the accident to your insurance company and to the DMV. This is typically time sensitive and should be done as quickly as possible following the accident.
Keep a File
Keep any and all documentation from the accident together. This information may be requested from an attorney, your insurance company, or the DMV.
